La première idée de ce travail remonte à la lecture du livre, déjà ancien, de mon regretté camarade et ami Auguste Couat sur Aristo¿zane et l'ancienne Comédie attiçue Dans cet ou vrage, plein de faits et d'idées, j'avais rencontré, relativement au sujet ici traité, quelques juge ments qui avaient suscité en mon des doutes sé rieux. C'esten y réfléchissant souvent eten mûris sant ces doutes que j'ai été conduit à écrire ce livre. Puisqu'il marque, en somme, une dissi dence entre Couat et moi, je tiens tout partien lièrement a la restreindre d'avance autant qu'il convient, en rendant ici un hommage sincère a la haute valeur de son travail.
