Grand marcheur et pionnier de l'alpinisme, Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), figure éminente de l'Angleterre victorienne et père de l'écrivain Virginia Woolf, a trouvé au contact de cette nature arpentée ou gravie un élixir de vie et une révélation spirituelle. Les trois textes réunis dans ce volume sont de petits traités philosophiques sertis de paysages magnifiques et sauvages, portés, sublimés, par une écriture poétique. Par cette pratique qui répond à un double besoin, physique et intellectuel, Leslie Stephen illustre par l'exemple et la réflexion le célèbre adage des Anciens : mens sana in corpore sano. La marche, dans les landes anglaises ou dans les Alpes, participe d'un exercice de méditation et de communion. Elle devient sous sa plume une ascèse libératrice à la portée de tous.
