Ai-je besoin d'ajouter que la traduction ainsi en tendue, surtout quand il s'agit d'oeuvres fort an ciennes ou créées par un génie profondément ditfé rent du nôtre, est un idéal qu'on ne saurait atteindre? Toute traduction est essentiellement imparfaite, puisqu'elle est le résultat d'un compromis entre deux obligations contraires d'une part l'obligation d'être aussi littéral qu'il se peut, de l'autre, l'ohli gation d'étre français. Mais de ces deux obligations il en est une qui n'admet pas de'moyen terme.
