A Grenoble, Champollion n'eut d'ebord pour maître que ce frère très dévoué, mais bientôt, en subissant, avec éclat, devant les commissaires Villars et lefèvre-gineau, les examens de concours, il obtint une bourse au lycée de Grenoble que venait d'organiser le gouvernement impérial dans l'ancien collège des Jésuites. Il avait alors treize ans. Ce fut dans cet établissement, immatriculé sous le numéro de lingerie 58, qu'il acheva en deux ans ses études classiques.
