«...E ora registro me stesso. Una penna, un foglietto, anche un microfono. Non è che mi senta pronto per stendere le memorie di un rompicoglioni. Voglio soltanto sistemare la mia gioia e, quando c'è, anche il mio sconforto. Per questo annoto, per questo registro. Perché la conquista della democrazia passa anche in un abbraccio, in una discussione sul liberalismo e un'altra sulle rivoluzioni, passa per ogni uomo e per ogni idea capace di migliorare il mondo. Passa per ognuna delle cazzate che ci vengono in mente e che abbiamo la voglia e la forza di comunicare e condividere. L'importante è osare e usarsi, l'importante è accettare ogni sfida che può guadagnare un grammo in più di libertà.» Un libro, Marco Pannella, non aveva mai voluto scriverlo. Come spiega Matteo Angioli, che ha raccolto e curato questa autobiografia: «... poi un giorno ha smesso di sentirsi immortale, ha avvertito che la battaglia, la sua battaglia, poteva concludersi presto. D'un tratto, però, si è trovato anche al cospetto del passato e deve aver cominciato a osservarlo, come forse non aveva mai fatto prima. Eccolo, dunque, il suo libro. Questo libro è una sorta di resoconto intimo di una passione totalizzante per la libertà e i diritti, di battaglie, digiuni, infinite discussioni, «come se la vita fosse una lunga riunione politica». Ma è anche il diario dell'amore e del dolore dei suoi ultimi mesi di vita, una lezione involontaria di saggezza e nobiltà d'animo di un uomo che non ha paura dei sentimenti e del loro scandalo radicale.

Vanessa Betts is a writer and editor from England. She went to India in 1997, as the first stop on a round-the-world ticket, and then found out that nowhere else could quite compare. After time spent living and working in Australia, Egypt and England she has been based in India, chiefly in Kolkata, since March 2006. Vanessa now lives in Israel where she’s updating Footprint’s new guide to the country.Victoria McCulloch is a nomad currently calling Goa home.
