Various postures have been given the parturient woman for the purpose of facilitating labor and affording the necessary obstetrical attention. In England the lateral position is preferred, while in France and Germany, as well as in this country, the woman is commonly delivered on her back. In certain uncivilized nations parturient women are te quired to stand. Among the ancients the sitting posture was common.
