Excerpt from The Acts of the Apostles, the Epistles of St. Paul, the Catholic Epistles, and the Apocalypse: Translated From the Latin Vulgate, and Diligently Compared With the Greek Text, Being a Revision of the Rhemish Translation, With Notes, Critical and Explanatory

The notes which I have added, though numerous, are as brief as I could well make them, since I meant them as helps to the reader, to guide him on his way, without distracting him from his Scriptural pursuits. I did not wish to write a homily, or compose a controversial essay, much less to launch forth on the wide ocean of allegorical interpretation. Although I am far from under valuing the devout contemplations of the ancient fathers on the mysteries hidden beneath the letter, I felt that for the theological student and the general reader, it is of more practical advantage to ascertain the direct and literal meaning, and I left for private scrutiny all that might lie beneath the surface, as a treasure to reward the diligent inquirer.
