Vol. 8 of the Cy Twombly Catalogue Raisonné completes the edition of the artist's graphic works presenting a total of 1,890 works on 1,952 pages. As a student at Black Mountain College in the early 1950s, Cy Twombly had startled his teachers, among them Ben Shahn and Robert Motherwell, with anarchistic pencil drawings. At the time considered an eccentric streak of Abstract Expressionism, they evolved, in the course of his career of sixty years, into an enormous and unparalleled artistic oeuvre encompassing painting, sculpture, and photography as well. His graphic work, though, continued to be the primal ground of his creativity that revolves around one major issue: to create, by means of a script-like sign system, an art in which chance and determinism interweave to a carpet of consciousness. Cy Twombly (1928, Lexington, VA – 2011, Rom) trat schon als Schüler und Student am Black Mountain College mit einzigartigen und bis dato fast unvorstellbar anarchisch-chaotischen Bleistiftzeichnungen ins künstlerische Bewusstsein der dort Lehrenden. Er wurde zum Lieblingsschüler von Ben Shahn und Robert Motherwell. Was damals noch als Exzentrik im Rahmen des abstrakten Expressionismus angesehen wurde, hat sich bis zum Tod des Künstlers in ein einzigartiges künstlerisches Gesamtwerk verwandelt, das alle Zeitströmungen aufgesogen hat, ohne die ursprüngliche Originalität und Erfindungsgabe auch nur im Geringsten zu verlieren. Ganz im Gegenteil: aus dem zeichnerischen Werk abgeleitet traten im Laufe der Zeit ebenso einflussreiche malerische Werkkomplexe in Malerei, Skulptur und Photographie ans Licht.
Mit Band 8 des Cy Twombly Catalogue Raisonné of Drawings liegt der zeichnerische Komplex nun abgeschlossen vor, in 1952 Seiten und 1890 Werken. Es ist sozusagen der künstlerische Urgrund der Schöpfungen des Künstlers, die alle um ein großes Thema kreisen: mit der Verwendung von schriftähnlichen Zeichensystemen eine Kunst zu schaffen, in der sich Zufall und Determinismus zu einem Bewusstseinsteppich verweben. Sie ist einer der wesentlichen Beiträge zur condition humaine im 20. Jahrhundert.
