Excerpt from Address to the People of St. Helena Parish
But you have determined, fellow citizens, to adopt these dan gerons expedients. You have instructed your delegates to call a convention, and should that call fail, to nullify, by the Legislature, the Tariff law of 1832. Four years ago, we were as a band of bro thers, united heart and hand in a struggle against oppression. This disastrous doctrine is introduced, and where are we now. Split into bitter factions - burning with mutual jealousies - and treasuring up for each other that deep resentment that should have been directed solely against our Oppressions The foundations of long established friendship have been broken up, the closest and dearest human ties have been dissolved, and sons of the same hon ored parents no longer clasp the hand of affection around the do mestic hearth Such are the first fruits of this pernicious heresy by its fruits should you judge it.
