During the late 1980s she spent two years as the first woman on the board of directors of Harvey Nichols. Lindy retired from fashion in 2000 to concentrate on writing. Her first book! War Paint (Virago)! a biography of Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden! was published in 2003. She is a regular contributor to The Spectator and The Times Saturday Magazine. A Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts! she is married with two sons and lives in southwest London and southwest France. The men who created the first department stores - what Zola called ´great cathedrals of shopping´ - made vast fortunes, but no one understood consumption as a sensual female entertainment better than the maverick American retailer Harry Gordon Selfridge. Zusammenfassung In 1909 London's first dedicated department store built from scratch opened in a glorious burst of publicity. In his eponymous store Selfridge created nothing less than 'the theatre of retail'. This book tells the story of a revolution in shopping and the rise and fall of a retail prince.
