Excerpt from The Seven Champions of Christendom

The Bibliographer's Manual, believes that in all probability this work had been read by Shakespeare in some earlier edition not now known. Mr. Carr, of the New Shake speare Society, points out some singular coincidences with Shakespeare's work numerous adumbrations, someti nes amount ing to direct quotation. The general im pression appears to be either that Johnson quotes Shakespeare, or that Shakespeare quotes Johnson (parts of the early editions of The Seven Champions being in blank verse - printed as prose - of more than respect able quality). I venture to suggest (as a guess, not as ahypothesis capable of proof) that both authors quote from an originalnow lost.
