Excerpt from A Treatise on Waterworks for the Supply of Cities and Towers: With a Description of the Principal Geological Formations of England as Influencing Supplies of Waters
I can bear testimony that the revision of these pages was completed within a. Few days of the fatal illness which closed a singularly active and useful life. Mr. Bugbee's professional career had been unusually extended it may be considered to have commenced at a time when railway enter prise was being carried on with much spirit, and he was associated with some of the most distinguished engineers of the period in the projection of the principal schemes which have since developed our present admirable network of railways.
At a later period, and quite in another channel, the zealous efforts of Mr. Hughes to uphold the rights of public bodies in the promotion of economic and sanitary measures attracted a deal of attention. His views respecting large private undertakings, water companies, gas companies, &c., which he was of opinion should be vested under municipal control, and conducted solely for public advantage, aroused a powerful feeling of antagonism in many quarters; but there is little doubt that a few years will see this system developed to an extent that will do justice to his convictions.
