Douze ans après la révolution, le régime soviétique reste une énigme pour des Occidentaux fascinés par Eisenstein et le cinéma russe. Ella Maillart a vingt-six ans. Elle obtient un visa et débarque à Moscou en 1930, dans un pays bouleversé, frappé par la famine. Elle loue une paillasse dans le deux-pièces de la comtesse Tolstoï, vit de thé et de pain noir, rame sur la Moskova avec de jeunes ouvriers et passe des heures dans la cabine de montage du réalisateur Vsevolod Poudovkine. Avec fraîcheur, elle note ce qu'elle voit, et parvient à se joindre à un groupe qui part découvrir la Svanéthie, traversant le massif
central du Caucase à pied. Ce voyage sera aussi pour elle l'occasion de découvrir les superbes images mongoles de Tempête sur l'Asie qui lui donneront un avant-goût de cet Orient qui bientôt deviendra sa vie.
