Today's adolescents are maturing during an historical time in our world. Technology is allowing them to become global citizens at earlier and earlier ages, and allowing them to incorporate many different world views into their developing sense of self. At the same time, today's adolescent is often more knowledgeable and skillful in using technology than their parents are, leaving them to navigate this wide world alone.

Dr. Erica Shifflet-Chila is Assistant Clinical Professor and Coordinator of Instructional Technology at Michigan State University School of Social Work. Her research focuses on the use of technology in education and adolescent development.
