Factors influencing the use of medicines by consumers in Tiko, Cameroon, tells the story of how economic challenges, strong sociocultural bonding and poor regulation contribute to inappropriate medicines access and use by consumers of health. It looks into three groups of consumers: teachers, taxi drivers and petty traders selling food crops and captures interesting view points from these three groups. Consumers obtain their medicines from officially and unofficially recognised medicines sales outlets. The reasons why consumers need and obtain medicines vary from actually health need to perceived health needs and course of treatment might be complete or incomplete depending on the financial viability of the consumer and the quantity available from a benevolent neighbour or friend or brother willing to share that which is available. About the author










Robert Chana, Pharmacist and Public Health Expert, focuses on understanding the root causes of inappropriate use of medicine. Born in Tiko, Cameroon, He studied Pharmacy in University of Nigeria, Nsukka and Public Health in The University of Western Cape, South Africa. He has worked for several organizations promoting appropriate use of medicine.
