He has published several books on marine biological topics, as editor, co-editor, author and co-author, and numerous scientific papers, especially on the marine Bryozoa. He has served as co-editor of the Journal of Natural History, and editor of the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, and is co-editor, with Dr John H. Crothers, of the Linnean Society Synopses of the British Fauna.
