À lire la correspondance que les deux hommes échangèrent pendant plus de trente ans, on se dit que Zweig est vraiment le fils que Freud aurait aimé avoir : il apprécie en lui sa « modestie intérieure », tout en étant séduit par l'écrivain, si proche à bien des égards d'Arthur Schnitzler qu'il considérait comme son « frère jumeau ».
À Zweig, Freud confie ce brevet de ressemblance : « Votre type est celui de l'observateur, de celui qui écoute et lutte de manière bienveillante et avec tendresse, afin d'avancer dans la compréhension de l'inquiétante immensité. » De son côté, Zweig sera l'un des rares écrivains viennois, le seul peut-être, à discerner d'emblée le génie de Freud, à le proclamer et' à le situer dans la lignée de Proust, Joyce et Lawrence. « J'appartiens, lui écrit-il, à cette génération d'esprits qui n'est redevable presque à personne autant qu'à vous en matière de connaissance. »
