La philosophie pratique n'a sans doute jamais mieux porté son nom que dans les Entretiens d'Épictète. Avec le fameux Manuel, traduit dans cette même collection, ces textes constituent l'un des piliers de la philosophie stoïcienne, promettant à chacun de vivre dans l'harmonie. Né en 50 et mort entre 125 et 130, cet ancien esclave n'a légué aucun écrit : sa doctrine et son enseignement ont traversé les siècles grâce aux notes recueillies par l'un de ses disciples.
Tournée tout entière vers l'action, la pensée d'Épictète repose sur une saine compréhension de ce qui est en notre pouvoir et de ce qui ne l'est pas. Il fait ici de ce principe un critère pour qui se sent submergé par les difficultés de la vie. Le philosophe ouvre ainsi la voie menant au contentement intérieur avec un tel génie que Nietzsche y voyait un exemple des plus grands chefs-d'oeuvre de la moralité antique.
