Toute existence sur la terre est confrontée à la fuite du temps et des êtres, à l'exil.
Les hommes se rassurent en s'imaginant enracinés dans le monde, mais le déracinement les guette un jour ou l'autre.
L'« exil » - telle est la thèse de l'auteur -, loin d'être une fatalité subie, est tout autre que le déracinement.
C'est une option existentielle face à la condition humaine, vécue comme une liberté créatrice héroïque, qui libère l'homme du déterminisme de la nature, pour lui ouvrir les voies du « retour », d'une sortie d'exil qui ne serait plus tournée vers le passé - sans pourtant le rejeter - mais vers le futur.
À la façon d'un récit philosophique, ce livre nous fait vivre l'expérience du temps propre à la pérégrination géographique et mentale de l'exilé.
