C'est pourquoi la vie n'est jamais compréhensible au sein de la temporalité, étant donné qu'à aucun moment nous ne pouvons atteindre la tranquillité qui permettrait d'assumer la position dirigée vers l'arrière. » Cette note de l'auteur résume bien ce petit livre excentrique où il est question d'amour, d'un amour qui ne peut se vivre.

La Répétition paraît en 1843, la même année que Crainte et Tremblement. Kierkegaard a juste trente et un ans. L'ouvrage a une connotation autobiographique où transparaissent les tourments de Kierkegaard dans sa relation avec Regine Olsen.
