Sud Viêt-nam, Nord Viêt-nam ? Certes, mais les Viêt-nam sont multiples dans ces quinze nouvelles de Robert Olen Butler. Si l'on y trouve évoqués, très peu, celui des combattants, un peu plus, celui des coutumes et des souvenirs d'une époque et d'un monde révolus, il y a surtout, et c'est là une surprenante découverte, celui des émigrés d'une «diaspora vietnamienne» - toujours scindée entre Nord et Sud - venue s'implanter aux Etats-Unis autour de La Nouvelle-Orléans sur les rives du Mississippi, double troublant du Mekong et de son delta. C'est donc le Viêt-nam mais aussi l'Amérique qui nous sont donnés à voir à travers ces portraits d'hommes et de femmes dépeints avec une poétique minutie, une époustouflante virtuosité dans l'interprétation de la voix de chacun, une constante émotion.
