Monique Lerbier est heureuse : elle épousera
bientôt l'homme qu'elle aime. Un soir, pourtant,
elle le surprend en compagnie de sa maîtresse.
Humiliée, elle se venge avec le premier venu,
puis, au lieu de rentrer dans le rang comme ses
parents le lui intiment, elle décide de prendre en
main son destin et ses amours. Avec gourmandise,
curieuse de tout, Monique va alors multiplier les
expériences émancipatrices, avec des femmes
comme avec les hommes qu'elle ravale au rang
de simples reproducteurs ou de «belles
machines à plaisir»... Si les femmes ont commencé
à se couper les cheveux «à la garçonne»,
c'est grâce à ce roman de 1922 qui fut le plus
grand best-seller des Années folles. L'énorme
scandale qu'il déclencha valut également à
Victor Margueritte (1866-1942) d'être radié de
la Légion d'honneur.
