Des six légendaires soeurs Mitford en Grande-Bretagne, les lecteurs francophones connaissaient surtout l'aînée, Nancy la romancière. Deborah, la petite dernière née en 1920, leur a été révélée en publiant Les Humeurs d'une châtelaine anglaise (Payot, 2006). Surnommée « Neuf » par Nancy qui ne lui concédait que neuf ans d'âge mental, elle n'en est pas moins devenue duchesse de Devonshire et a restauré Chatsworth, le Versailles anglais.
Comme au fil d'une conversation amicale, elle aborde ici des sujets aussi divers que sa petite-fille mannequin Stella Tennant, la singulière espèce des intendants de domaines, l'hypocondrie des vieilles dames, la fermeture d'une poste champêtre, les messes commémoratives ou encore les séances de dédicace. S'y ajoute le passionnant journal qu'elle a tenu lors de l'investiture puis des funérailles d'un parent... Un certain John Kennedy.
Deborah Devonshire a fait paraître aussi ses mémoires, Duchesse à l'anglaise (Payot, 2012).
