Cette anecdote, parmi bien d'autres, est rapportée
par un érudit du XVIII^e siècle, Pierre-Thomas-Nicolas
Hurtaut, pour qui péter était un art et le pet, bien
lancé, une arme sociale.
Publié en 1751, L'Art de péter est rapidement
devenu un classique de la littérature comique
pseudo-médicale. Avec une précision fort peu
convaincante pour la médecine, mais très amusante
pour les esprits mal tournés, Hurtaut montre
toute la diversité des pets, qu'il classe selon leur
musicalité, et décrit les différentes manières d'en
prolonger, d'en moduler, ou d'en minorer les
sonorités.
