Lorenzaccio : drame en cinq actes, 1834

Entremetteur et favori du duc Alexandre
qui règne en tyran débauché sur la cité
corrompue de Florence, Lorenzaccio n'est
pas ce qu'il paraît : un jour de 1537, il
assassine le duc avant de mourir lui-même -
sans que la cité recouvre sa liberté.
C'est sur la réalité historique de la Renaissance
italienne que Musset s'appuie pour
écrire ce drame, qu'il publie en 1834 dans
Un spectacle dans un fauteuil et qui ne sera
pas joué de son vivant. Mais la pièce fait
aussi écho à l'époque de sa rédaction, à
ces années d'après 1830 où l'inefficacité
des républicains de Florence et la passivité
devant la tyrannie trouvent une résonance
manifeste.
La quête de soi qui conduit Lorenzo à
l'autodestruction ne prend donc tout son
sens que dans l'atonie politique de la cité,
et son échec individuel contresigne celui de
Florence devant ses tyrans. Zola l'avait perçu :
«Il y a là un drame digne de Shakespeare.»
