Dans notre maison de Varsovie, au 10, rue Krochmalna, vivait un couple âgé. [...] Mais les voisins racontaient que, malgré leur âge avancé, ces deux-là étaient toujours amoureux l'un de l'autre...
Or soudain, une rumeur se mit à circuler qui scandalisa tout le monde : les deux vieillards allaient divorcer ! La rue Krochmalna était sens dessus dessous...
Isaac Bashevis Singer nous raconte ici ses souvenirs d'enfance dans la Varsovie juive d'autrefois. Son père, rabbin, était juge et arbitre des petits et des grands problèmes qui se posaient quotidiennement au sein de la communauté.
Dans l'embrasure de la porte, un petit garçon écoutait avec passion, ignorant que ce qu'il entendait deviendrait la matière même d'une des plus grandes oeuvres littéraires du XX^e siècle.
Peut-être le plus beau, le plus parfait des livres d'Isaac Bashevis Singer.
