Lorsque Molière fait jouer Les Femmes savantes
en 1672, un an avant sa mort, il ne moque
ni les femmes ni le savoir, mais cette ostentation
des connaissances qui contrevient à ce qu'on nomme
alors l'honnêteté. Le sujet comme l'écriture de cette
pièce, en cinq actes et en vers, en font l'une des plus
achevées de nos comédies.
La pièce ne rencontre qu'un premier succès limité.
Mais elle s'impose dès la fin du siècle, et cette fois
pour toujours, par le brio de la satire, le mordant
de la raillerie et les ressources d'un comique
que rien n'a pu vieillir.
