About the author

Monica White is a Lecturer in Slavonic Studies at the University of Nottingham, where she teaches Byzantine and Rus history, the history of the Orthodox Church and Orthodox sainthood.

The transformation of Saints George, Demetrios, Theodore and others into the patrons of Byzantine armies was one of the defining developments of religious life under the Macedonian emperors.
