Les troubles de la mémoire ont toujours préoccupé Freud, et ce, avant même la découverte de l'inconscient. Pratiquement toute son oeuvre s'en fait l'écho, mais nulle part aussi clairement que dans les textes réunis ici : la première des Cinq leçons sur la psychanalyse, qui raconte comment, dès l'origine, Freud et Breuer se sont interrogés au sujet des troubles amnésiques qu'ils constataient chez les patients hystériques ; et plusieurs chapitres de Psychopathologie de la vie quotidienne qui, des différentes sortes d'oubli aux fameux souvenirs-écrans, nous rappellent qu'un trouble de la mémoire peut se produire chez une personne saine et n'implique pas forcément une altération du cerveau.
