Si l'on sait peu de choses sur la vie privée d'Émile Zola, c'est qu'il s'est peu livré : pas de Journal, pas de Mémoires, une correspondance surtout professionnelle. Sociable, fidèle, secret : tel fut l'écrivain. Cette façon d'être avec les autres tout en se retirant, son goût nostalgique du passé et sa croyance dans la modernité, sa religiosité et son amour des symboles se reflètent dans la maison qu'il acquiert en 1878 à Médan, au bord de la Seine, avec l'argent que lui a rapporté l'immense succès de L'Assommoir. Décorée et meublée à son image, Zola y reçoit son éditeur et ses amis, et s'y enferme pour écrire, en compagnie de son épouse, l'indispensable et bienveillante Alexandrine. Dix ans plus tard, c'est pourtant dans cette même maison qu'il tombera amoureux d'une lingère, la jolie Jeanne Rozerot, 21 ans, dont il aura deux enfants...
