Maximes

La reine Christine (1626-1689), pendant son règne, a fait de Stockholm l'Athènes du Nord. Sa grande curiosité intellectuelle et sa vaste culture l'amènent à correspondre avec toute l'Europe savante et attirent Descartes à sa cour, où il meurt en 1651.
Après avoir régné dix ans, cette femme énigmatique abdique avec éclat, à l'âge de vingt-sept ans. Ses Maximes, à la fois cyniques et exaltées, dont nous présentons ici un choix, ont été écrites directement en français. Leur style, lapidaire et sans réplique, évoque celui de son contemporain La Rochefoucauld, dont elle a médité et commenté les Maximes.
