Les enfants peuvent-ils être analysés ? La plupart des psychanalystes, dans les années 1920, ne le pensaient pas. Pour Melanie Klein, plutôt que de rejeter ces patients, il fallait modifier la méthode. Elle eut alors trois coups de génie. Le premier fut l'invention de la technique du jeu : elle voyait dans cette activité spontanée de tous les enfants un équivalent du rêve, donc un accès à leur inconscient. Deuxième coup de génie : elle montra que le complexe d'OEdipe et le surmoi apparaissaient bien plus tôt que ne le pensait Freud. Troisième coup de génie : elle révéla qu'un enfant de trois ou quatre ans était capable d'un transfert, ce qui le rendait apte au traitement psychanalytique. Les textes révolutionnaires qui composent ce livre posent donc les bases de la psychanalyse de l'enfant.
