The definition of a list of elements that determine the visual quality of the landscape, presented as a basic tool to deepen the knowledge of the territory and justify interventions in the environment. The various approaches consider the elements resulting from two different perspectives: one that integrates the components related to the configuration elements of the visual territory, and another that relates to variables that determine the landscape perception and its assessment. This article identifies and characterizes each of the groups of components and variables based on their origin or physical state. The result allows the construction of a model that is appropriate and that relates the different groups of Determinant Visual Elements of the Landscape.

About the author










Pedro Fidalgo is a PhD urbanist, researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History of the New University of Lisbon.As architect, he works on the Lisbon Arena recovery, and is author of interventions at Dª Maria Nacional Teather and S. Carlos Nacional Ópera House.
