The herbal wealth of India and the knowledge of their medicinal properties have a long tradition. In India several ethnic group live depending on plants for the cure of their ailments and well being of their health. At a time when world is facing multifaceted crisis then it is obvious that the management of overpopulation is must. Reviewing the facts and evidences on the safety and effectiveness of the presently practiced methods of fertility regulation, development of new method seemed to be very much indispensable. various steroidal preparations, though cent percent effective in terms of fertility regulating capability, the disturbances produced by them on the hormonal system of the body by no means is desirable. So focus is now on screening of a few edible medicinal plants, reported to have antimicrobial activities and other medicinal importance namely, garlic, onion, ginger,mango ginger, turmeric, clove, cardamom, bay leaf, cinnamon etc. for their spermicidal function and selection of most active plant on the basis of mammalian sperm inactivation so that partial purification and characterization of active principle may lead to open a new vista towards herbal contraception.

About the author

The author presently is serving as Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology, Charuchandra College under University of Calcutta, India. She is running UGC sponsored Major Research Project and providing research training to a student. She has done her Postdoctoral training from NII, New Delhi, and has 9 publications in peer reviewed journals
