Dieser 107. Band der Reihe "Mathematical Research" ist ein Ergebnisband der von der Dortmunder Universität veranstalteten 3. Internationalen Tagung über Multivariate Approximation. Schwerpunkte dieser Tagung sind insbesondere Interpolation und Approximation auf Kugeln und Sphären, Approximation durch Lösungen von Differentialgleichungen, Konstruktion von Knoten-Systemen und Scattered Data-Techniken.
Anliegen der Herausgeber des Bandes ist es, klassische Aspekte der Approximationstheorie mit neuen, modernen Methoden der Angewandten Mathematik zu kombinieren, um so die Wirksamkeit und praktische Relevanz der Mathematik zu dokumentieren.

About the author
Dr. Werner Haußmann ist Akad. Oberrat am Lehrstuhl für Religionspädagogik und Didaktik des ev. Religionsunterrichts an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
Manfred Reimer arbeitete nach der Promotion an der Universität Tübingen zunächst als Wissenschaftlicher Assistent am Mathematischen Institut Tübingen. 1966 folgt die Habilitation, ebenfalls in Tübingen. 1967/68 arbeitete Professor Reimer als Research Assistant Professor an der University of Maryland. 1969 wechselte er als ordentlicher Professor an die Universität Dortmund, wo er an der Gründung und dem Aufbau des Mathematischen Instituts mitwirkte, forschte und lehrte. Seit 1999 ist er emeritiert, aber weiterhin wissenschaftlich tätig.
