Première importante monographie dédiée à l'oeuvre de l'artiste franco-argentin Pablo Reinoso, souvent associé à sa réflexion sur les frontières entre art et design, l'ouvrage revient sur un peu plus de quatre décennies de création.
Depuis les années 1970, Pablo Reinoso travaille par séries - Les Articulations (1970-1980), Les Paysages d'eau (1981-1986), La Découverte de l'Amérique (1986-1989), Les Respirantes (1995-2002) - qu'il parcourt en explorant des univers et des matériaux différents.
En 2002, l'installation Ashes to Ashes opère un premier renversement, préfigurant son travail sur les objets du quotidien. Dans la série suivante, il s'attaque à une icône du design industriel, la chaise Thonet, objet idéal entre tous pour jouer avec la notion de fonction. En ôtant à la chaise sa première utilité, il libère toutes les autres potentialités, créant ainsi des prêts-à-manger, des prêts-à-thonet, autant de ready-made à l'envers.
À partir de 2006, Pablo Reinoso investit un nouvel objet : le banc public, symbole du design anonyme traversant les cultures en étant hors-temps et hors-mode. Dès lors, les bancs dits Spaghetti prolifèrent et se confrontent à tous les espaces, comme animés d'une vie propre, défiant leur ADN. Ils rencontrent rapidement un très fort écho et deviennent emblématiques de l'oeuvre de l'artiste. Plus récemment, à travers les séries des Garabatos et des Poutrelles, son travail dans l'espace public a conquis de nouveaux territoires de l'art. En s'appuyant sur des matériaux de construction bruts que l'artiste détourne de leur usage originel, il crée des espaces nouveaux dans les villes, des pauses dans le paysage, des oeuvres qui invitent à la rencontre.
This is the first major book on the Franco-Argentinian artist
Pablo Reinoso, known for his explorations of the frontiers
between art and design, which his work constantly seeks to
question and redefine. This book considers the artist's entire
oeuvre, created over some four decades and more.
In the 1970s, Reinoso began working in series - Articulations
(1970-1980), Paysages d'eau (1981 -1986), The Discovery of America
(1986-1989), and the Breathing Sculptures (1995- 2002) - exploring
and mining their possibilities in very different contexts and in a
wide range of materials.
The installation Ashes to Ashes (2002) marked a turning point,
anticipating his work on everyday items. In the next series the
artist took on the Thonet chair, an icon of industrial design ideally
suited to interrogations of the notion of function. Stripping the
chair of its habitual use, he released its potential, subverting the
ready-made in ready-to-eat, ready-to-Thonet sculptures.
In 2006, Reinoso turned his attention to the public bench. This
anonymous symbol of design crosses cultures while remaining
immune to time and fashion. The so-called Spaghetti benches
began to appear and grow in a variety of spaces, seemingly alive and
shaped by their own DNA. They quickly acquired great popularity
with the public and became emblematic of the artist's work.
More recently Reinoso has become increasingly involved in the
public domain and his work has conquered new territories. In
the Garabatos and Beams series, the artists takes construction
materials and subverts their habitual uses to create new spaces
in cities - moments of pause in the landscape that invite us to
engage with both the works and with each other.
