Excerpt from Vor Dem Sturm: Roman Aus Dem Winter 1812 Auf 13

The text of this book is extracted from the third and fourth volumes of Theodor Fontane's historical romance, Vor dem Sturm. It deals with an important and stirring chapter in Prussian history, the momentous period immediately preceding the War of Liberation in 1813. The narrative is not only instructive from a historical point Of view, but is also eminently calculated to enlarge the student's acquaintance with the customs and manners of the German people.

Beside occupying a foremost place in contemporary German literature, the author was a pronounced admirer of Great Britain, which he has eulogised in prose and verse. His style is pure and charming, and he well knows how to sustain the interest Of his readers.

This is the first time that one of Fontane's works has been edited as an English school-book, and a short biography of the author will, therefore, not be super fluous. An Introduction has also been added for the better understanding of the period, while passing references to historic personages and great events are further dealt with in the Notes.
