Excerpt from Sketches of Our Information as to Railroads: Also, an Account of the Stockton and Darlington Railway

The advantage possessed by stone-tracks ln admrttrng the employment upon them of wheels of the ordrnary con structron, rs shared by the plate or tram rarl-road, and thls renders that form superror tdlothers, for many pur poses. These tram-roads seem to be almost un1versally in use ln the mrrreral drstrrcts of Wales Thrs preference ls approved of, but wrthout assrgnrng any adequate reasonfor rt, by Mr Overton, an engrneer of that country.e The only shadow of an advantage clarmed for the system is, that rt presents a gr eater resrstance on descents where retardatron rs requrred But thrs excess of retardatron rs corrtrnual, and rt rs certarnly preferable to get rld of rt, and to produce, from other causes, the reqrrrred rncrease of resrstance, only rn those srtuatrqns where rt rs necessary. Mr vvood1l determrnes, from experrment, the relatrve re srstance on the plate-rarl and the edge-rarl to be as 78 63, and rf, as rs probable, the rarls rrr those experrments were swept clean, thrs proportron must be more ln favour of the plate-rarl than that lrkely to be afforded by the aver age performance upon them for the greatest drsadvantage of the plate-rarl rs, that rt rs so much more apt to retarn mupon rt those substances whrch Increase the resrstance. The suggestron of Mr Tredgold,i that the angle formed by the plate and 1ts ledge should be rounded off; wrll, I have no doubt, be found advantageous rn practrce, as rt must tend to prevent the rubbrng of the wheels upon the ledge.
