Excerpt from Dix Contes
After contributing to many literary journals he published I ntimz'tés (1868) and in the following year Poémes M odernes. Certain poems Of this period, such as La Benediction - the story of the heroic Spanish monk at the capture of Saragossa in 1809 - and La Gre've des F orgerons, have remained extraordinarily popular. Many are still favourite pieces for recitation. Doubtless it was no less his choice of subjects than his excellence of form that so speedily commended coppée to his wide audience. His subjects he found more and more in the lives of the people, in factory and street, among the inarticulate and resigned poor. His scenes are delineated with intense realism, and if sometimes the pathos is overdone, it may be conceded that for the poet who chooses to treat of Coppée's world, les Humbles,' it is not easy to avoid this reproach. That his Work has lent itself to parody is not necessarily his fault. His observation is exact, his unfolding of a story charming, and his versification finished.
