Desde el descubrimiento del mar del Sur, los castellanos no apartaban sus ansiosas miradas de aquellas playas que les ofrecían oro, misteriosi conquistas. Uno de los mas audaces, Pascual de Andagoya, fué el primero en lanzarse a la mar, pero a la vuelta de una breve e ingrata cruzada, trajo solo des aliento i miserias en vez del peso del oro. Pizarro se ocupaba entretanto en el servicio de la colonia como hombre de guerra. Almagro vivia como colono.
