Am Morgen des 29. Mai zeigten sich in der Ferne mehrere Segler, die beim Näherkommen als Lotsenboote erkannt wurden. Eines derselben legte um 9 Uhr an unser Schiff an und gab uns den Lotsen ab; wir waren noch über 200 Meilen von new-york entfernt. Unter den Lotsen be steht ein sehr scharfer Wettbewerb; sie erscheinen meist schon Hunderte von Meilen vor dem Hafen. Ein Lotse erhält für eine Ein und Ausfahrt 280 Dollars.
