During the years that have elapsed since the publica tion of the first edition, much new information, letters, and pa ers have come to light in reference to Garrick's life an theatrical career. The work itself has become scarce, and is in much demand, on account of the original matter contained in it, and which is to be found nowhere else. The whole has been carefully re vised, all errors that have been pointed out by reviewers and others have been corrected, redundant passages have been pruned down, and any new and interesting information has been worked in. The difficulty has been to make a selection of what is really essential; for the mass of Garrick letters and papers is literally enormous. I hope, therefore, that, in its new shape, the book will be found acceptable.
