« Le titre même l'indique : ce court traité sur la tranquillité de l'âme, sur la mer d'huile intérieure, ne ressemble guère à un livre de philosophie tel que nous le concevons de nos jours ; la tranquillité n'est pas un de nos problèmes philosophiques, pas même un terme technique. Nous imaginerions plutôt qu'elle est un problème de vie spirituelle et mystique. Le pire embarras qu'éprouve un moderne, quand il aborde Sénèque, est celui-ci : qu'était-ce donc que la philosophie en ce temps-là ? Que voulait dire ce mot il y a vingt siècles ? À quoi cela servait-il ? Questions d'autant plus pertinentes que la philosophie ainsi conçue s'est remise à nous intéresser, sous un certain angle bien particulier, celui de l'individu ou du sujet qui ne compte plus que sur lui-même et sait qu'il ne peut pas se fier à une nature, à l'histoire ou à la vérité. »
