Plutarque (46 -120 après J.-C.) n'a cessé de manifester un très vif intérêt pour la médecine, qu'il étudia en même temps que la philosophie. La santé du corps et la santé de l'esprit s'avèrent en effet indissociables dans ce bref traité rédigé après la mort de l'empereur Titus, en 81 de notre ère.
Le philosophe y prône une hygiène de vie équilibrée au nom de l'harmonie, de la mesure et de la maîtrise de soi. Plutarque donne ici un certain nombre de conseils pour conserver ou retrouver la santé par des pratiques simples qui n'ont rien perdu de leur
actualité.
