Natural wetlands are the most important and indispensable sources of ecological balance in our environment. They serve as the backbone of environment and are helpful in preventing pollution. They keep the soil wet and help in growing vegetation. Generally wetlands include marshes, swamps, bogs & other such areas which lie low. Recently the wetlands are decreasing in quantity and quality due to harmful activities by human beings. Due to population explosion, the need and demand for food has led the use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Domestic rubbish and industrial wastes, sewage and urban wastes are polluting them. Construction of dams and soil erosion are also important factors for the loss of wetlands. The Physico-chemical parameters like temperature, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total alkalinity, pH, total dissolved solids, turbidity, conductivity, chemical oxygen demand, nitrate & ammonical nitrogen of five natural wetlands of Kota as well as the status and impact on migratory birds has been studied. We hope this book will prove its usefulness to students, researchers, academicians, wetland conservators, NGOs and all others concerned with the subject.
