The safety of food especially powdered infant formulas (PIF) and opened-vended powdered milk (OVPM) from microbial contamination is of great concern in public health worldwide. The microbial safety of powdered infant formulas and opened-vended milk cannot be over-emphasised as this has a serious implication on the growth, health and behaviour of infants. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) met jointly in Geneva in 2004 to convene an expert meeting on Cronobacter sakazakii and other microorganisms in powdered infant formula. The meeting was organized in response to a request from the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene for input into the revision of the Recommended International Code of Hygienic Practice for Foods for Infants and Children. Cronobacter sakazakii occurred in Powdered Infant Formulas (PIF) and Opened-vended Powdered Milk (OVPM) samples and the antibacterial susceptibility were determined using standard methods. The MIC, MBC of 39.06µg/ml and 78.13µg/ml were obtained from Ciprofloxacin. The rate of killing showed that Ciprofloxacin and Gentamycin killed Cronobacter sakazakii completely at 240 minutes.
