Psychrotrophic bacteria can thrive in cold environments and are responsible for spoiling refrigerated foods. They have received increased attention by the scientific community due to their resistance to multiple antibiotics. More interestingly, high degree of heavy metals resistance have shown to be associated with multiple antibiotic resistance. This study evaluated therefore the distribution of antibiotic and heavy metal resistant traits among the group of psychrotrophs retrieved from refrigerated spoiled food. The discovery of heavy metal resistant psychrotrophs may aid the search for novel enzymes with bioremediation ability and further enhance our understanding of the mechanisms of metal resistance induced at low temperatures.
