About the author

JON ABBINK is an anthropologist and senior researcher at the African Studies Centre at Leiden University. He is co-editor of History and Culture: Essays on the Work of Eric R. Wolf. His most recent articles are on politics, ethnicity and culture in Northeast Africa.

GERTI HESSELING is attached to the African Studies Centre at Leiden University and has been its Director since 1996. She is the author of many publications and recently edited a special issue of Politique Africaine on `Femmes, Pouvoirs, Sociétés'.
