About the author

Norbert Schneider (1945–2019) war Professor für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Karlsruhe. Zu seinen Arbeitsgebieten zählten die Kunstgeschichte des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit – hier besonders die Geschichte der Malereigattungen –, die kunstwissenschaftliche Methodologie und Probleme der Philosophiegeschichte. Er ist Autor zahlreicher Buchpublikationen. Bei TASCHEN sind von ihm Porträtmalerei, Stillleben und Vermeer erschienen.
