« Le conflit politique décisif, qui gouverne tout autre conflit, est, dans notre culture, le conflit entre l'animalité et l'humanité de l'homme » ; c'est pourquoi « se demander en quelle manière - chez l'homme - l'homme a été séparé du non-homme et l'animal de l'humain est plus urgent que prendre position sur les grandes questions, sur les prétendus valeurs et droits humains ». En partant d'une lecture de Heidegger et de Kojève, Giorgio Agamben poursuit la réflexion menée dans les livres précédents autour du concept de vie, et s'interroge sur le seuil critique qui produit l'humain, qui distingue et en même temps rapproche humanité et animalité de l'homme, qui décide « à chaque fois et en chaque individu de l'humain et de l'animal, de la nature et de l'histoire, de la vie et de la mort ».
